The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel, and may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer. In the absence of a psalmist, the lector will recite the Psalm between the readings.
The readers or lectors play an important role in the Liturgy of the Word as they proclaim and share the Word of God with the people gathered. Following the Introductory Rites, the lector moves to the ambo, and reads from the Lectionary the readings for that Sunday or weekday.
This ministry requires that the lector understands and reflects on the Word beforehand to grasp the message in its entirety, to understand its nuances and challenges, to “hear” the divine voice speaking through the text, and to present it to the people in a way that helps the Word come alive.
Volunteers are trained to proclaim the Word of God at all Liturgies, as a Lector. Preparation for this ministry occurs as new Lectors become available. For information call Sister Loretta Primus 302-829-8183 (Email her here).
