The Resources were planned by the Armenian Church, the first nation to embrace Christianity in 301 A.D. This year also commemorates the 1700th Anniversary of the Nicene Creed, which is prayed by most Christian Churches and will be prayed together at this Service.

The practice of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was introduced in 1908 by Fr. Paul Wattson, the founder of an Anglican religious community who became Catholic and founded the Graymoor Friars and Sisters of Atonement. The cause for canonization for Father Paul Wattson was officially opened by the Archdiocese of New York in 2015, and documents were sent to Rome for further investigation into his holiness, progressing him to the title of Servant of God.

(The resources for this service were jointly published by the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity (Vatican).
